  Kennametal Technology is seeking a summer intern at our Technology Center in Latrobe, PA to work in the Materials Analysis and Metrology group. This internship would be appropriate for a student completing their junior or senior year in a science or engineering program. The project will involve one of two options depending on the match with student experience:

Exploration of new applications for analytical techniques for hardmetals and coating systems.
Core responsibilities will include conducting experiments to establish operating parameters for test equipment and qualify appropriate standards for testing. Additional opportunities may include design of fixtures or sample holders and automation of measurement systems. Coursework in chemistry and/or materials science and knowledge of materials characterization techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, hardness and adhesion testing will be valuable for this position. Laboratory experience with adhesion testing of thin film coatings, nanohardness testing, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy or other spectroscopy techniques, metallographic sample preparation and/or optical microscopy with image analysis would be a plus.


Implementation of a cobot in a machining environment.
Responsibilities will include operating and programming a collaborative robot with 3D scanning sensor to monitor surface roughness and tool wear. Knowledge of, or hands-on experience with robotics, measurement automation, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, 3D modelling and/or CAD/CAM will be valuable for this position.

Job Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Preferably a student in their junior year at an accredited University. Focus of study in engineering or science preferred.
Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Strong written and verbal communication skills a must.
Term of internship will run from May to August, 2020.
