Automation Engineer

Location:  Roanoke Rapids, NC

 

Job Summary

This position works with related Manufacturing facilities, Product Engineering, Technology, Corporate IT and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering in automationdevelopment for modernization efforts as well as converting legacy data systems to integrated next generation business systems and automation/equipment controls development/troubleshooting to enhance modernization efforts.  The position will also lead equipment installations, evaluate and process improvements, and troubleshooting efforts, along with evaluating and developing global automation standards for manufacturing.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop functional specifications and acceptance criteria for automation equipment and work with Sourcing to obtain proposals.
  • Drives manufacturing execution through integration of IT systems and manufacturing equipment (including automation, robotics, production process equipment, continuous improvement and lean) for improvements in product quality, machine availability, and manufacturing costs. 
  • Develop a primary focus and implement machine control standards (programmable logic controller, input/output signals, MT connect interface) to integrate process automation with manufacturing burins systems. 
  • Evaluate proposals for technical capability, work with a team to finalize vendor selection, and prepare AFE documentation to secure project funding.
  • After PO placed, work with selected vendor to finalize system design, controls package, and operator interface.  Complete Factory Acceptance Test and Site Acceptance Test.
  • Lead installation in manufacturing, including the preparation of procedures and other manufacturing documentation necessary to run automation equipment.
  • Develop or transition improved automation processes to manufacturing, which includes the modification or functional design of existing automation programs, vision systems, mechanical system, robotic system, servos, controls, vision system, and mechanical components. 
  • Commission automation equipment, program (ladder logic, structured text, robot controllers), review or approved electrical, mechanical, pneumatic/hydraulic schematic, and develop database reporting functions. 
  • Provide on-site assistance and support manufacturing process at manufacturing plants for trouble-shooting, quality improvements, capability issues, productivity improvement, machine performance tracking and capital purchases. Identifying opportunities and improved processes through application of new equipment and systems, improved programming techniques, process evaluation/improvements, material handling and other engineering related areas. 

 

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of relevant industry experience
  • Bachelors in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or similar)
  • Must be able to travel up to 20% both domestic or international
