This position welds various parts used in manufacturing Kennametal products, directs Welder “B” personnel, and provides on-the-job training and order welding machines and supplies.


  • Title of the supervisor of this position. Supervisor – Maintenance


  • This position works under the supervision of the Supervisor – Maintenance or in his absence the Manager – Manufacturing Engineering, with direction also provided by the facilitator of the project the machinist is working on. Duties are performed without constant supervision. Assignments are made on a daily through weekly basis and results are reviewed daily/weekly.


  • This position requires:
    • (1) a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma;
    • (2) completion of basic math, blueprint reading, and gauge reading training;
    • (3) American Welding Society certification in MIG, stick and TIG welding in Flat, Vertical, Overhead and Out of Position modes;
    • (4) working knowledge of welding machines and welding materials;
    • (5) ability to read and understand written and oral instructions and ability to communicate with supervisors and coworkers;
    • (6) a forklift operators license preferred;
    • (7) three years of welding experience including ability to perform Welder ‘B’ duties; and
    • (8) certification as a journeyman in the metal trades industry or current participation in the Kennametal Apprentice Program is preferred. In addition, candidates will be required to demonstrate their welding ability by passing a hands-on welding test and must have demonstrated leadership qualities in previous position(s).



  • Safety: Perform pre-operation checks for both individual machines and work area. Perform safety inspections required for individual machines and associated equipment.
  • Production:
    • Perform electric arc, MIG, TIG and oxy-acetylene welding in Flat, Vertical, Overhead and Out of Position modes, as required for product and maintenance repair of plant facilities, equipment and vehicles.
    • Braze with oxy-acetylene. ƒ Perform various specialty welding, i.e., cast white metal, aluminum, etc.
    • Provide on-the-job training for Welder “B” employees.
    • Place orders for welding supplies.
    • Construct, fabricate, repair and rework prototype tools and equipment for the purpose of testing and developing new products and improving present products.
    • Manufacture, fabricate and repair production shop tools, equipment, jigs, fixtures, etc.
  • Quality: Inspect parts to the appropriate drawing and submit to Quality as specified to meet established ISO requirements.
  • Delivery: Process shop orders to meet established due dates and develop standards
  • Cost: Optimize process to minimize time and materials.
  • Inventory: Order parts and materials as required.
  • Lean: Participate in lean events and utilize lean processes in daily duties.
  • TPM: Perform daily required TPM on equipment.
  • 5S: Perform daily required 5S activities for work area.
  • Metrics: Perform daily activities associated with gathering and posting established metrics.
  • Data: Accurate and timely recording or required data (i.e. Production, quality etc)
