Summary of Job:

Responsible to set tooling into CNC hydraulic presses and then for operating the equipment in the manufacture of carbide inserts.  Performs actions with press controls to “size in” inserts and to set pick and place units.  This position performs critical activities to set up presses with precise actions in order to avoid “crashing the tools”.  Checks work product status at various intervals during production cycle.  Identifies non-conforming parts and maintains appropriate quality records.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Actively participate in department safety program activities including two-minute warning prior to initiating work assignments; practice safe housekeeping; follow established work procedures; complete safety objectives; and, report all incidents in a timely manner.
  2. Based on work instructions that are included with each work order packet, the Set Up Operator selects the required tooling for the particular product that is to be produced on the press.  Carefully follows the set up procedure and then runs a limited number of parts to ensure all geometries and measurements are correct.
  3. After the hydraulic press has been set-up for production, the Set Up Operator coordinates the production cycle of one or more presses, based on the type of product that is to be produced.  Responsible for producing parts that meet quality requirements.
  4. Performs routine press maintenance and cleaning of the immediate work area.
  5. Accurately completes the work order based on information included in the work order packet.
  6. Completes all paperwork per ISO-9001:2008 standards.
  7. Works various shifts as required, and overtime when requested. 
  8. Follows proper procedures to request materials and supplies.
  9. Actively participates in various teams as required.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Following appropriate training, must be able to load  press tools into press and make mechanical and computer adjustments to allow press to manufacture good quality parts.  Requires ability to carefully handle heavy metal equipment to prevent damage to tools and to the press.
  • Following appropriate training, must be able to manufacture and inspect press parts to very close tolerances
  • Must be able to read and interpret detailed engineered drawings
  • Must be able to follow detailed written and/or verbal instructions
  • Must be able to use a variety of measuring instruments such as micrometers, digital scales and microscopic view systems
  • Must be able to apply new job-related information in an efficient manner

Equipment Used:

  1. Hydraulic presses
  2. Inspection equipment (Micrometers, digital scales, microscopes, etc.)
  3. Various hand tools and bench equipment
  4. Shop floor data collection system


Education Guidelines:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.


Experience Guidelines:

  1. Must have at least one years experience working as a Press Operator (or very similar set up experience in a similar manufacturing environment)
  2. Three to five years experience working in a manufacturing environment required.


Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to work either standing or sitting for long periods of time
  2. Must be able to frequently climb a two step platform attached to the press
  3. Must be able to lift 5 to 20 lbs. routinely.  Occasionally lifting up to 55 lbs. 
  4.  Must be able to visually inspect parts to very close tolerances.
  5. Must be able to comply with special handling requirements associated with cemented carbide manufacturing (good hand dexterity required)


Job Conditions and Hazards:

  1. Some mist / dust generated from machine operation.  Graphite on trays and equipment will soil hands and clothing.
  2. Finger cuts from sharp tooling and/or tools
  3. Loose clothing, long hair, and/or jewelry could tangle in machine
  4. Potential for parts to fly from the machine or fixture
  5. Pinched and/or smashed fingers from machine operations
