Additive Manufacturing Engineer
Position Description
Introduction:
Kennametal is a global leader in producing metal cutting tools and wear resistant components. scientific research and materials development, located 40 miles east of Pittsburgh, PA and is seeking an Additive Manufacturing Engineer at the Latrobe Technology Center.
Job Summary:
Building on its substantial experience with powder process of WC-Co and other wear materials, Kennametal created a business unit in additive manufacturing using binder jetting for WC-Co materials. The technology center supports the business unit by developing materials, processes, and products to create significant business opportunities. This engineer will interact with the external technical community to identify emerging processes and materials for adaptation to Kennametal materials and applications. This engineer will be working closely with marketing, product engineering, and manufacturing to create innovative products for commercialization.
Duties (Listed in order of importance):
- Perform hands-on R&D and evaluation of advanced materials, methods, and technologies related to additive manufacturing systems. Identify novel and innovative applications for additive manufacturing materials and technologies to generate new business opportunities. Develop “best practices” for additive manufacturing systems. Educate other internal organizations (design analysis, end users, etc.) regarding capabilities and best practices to take full advantage of additive manufacturing systems.
- Conduct materials, process, and product development activities related to additive manufacturing in support of customer requirements, implement process improvements as well as to create new business opportunities.
- Lead new additive manufacturing technology development projects, including assessing and recommending AM systems, implementing process improvements, developing materials, processes, and capabilities with new technologies.
- Interact with the external technical community to assess emerging trends and build relationships in support of commercial development opportunities.

Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent with experience in materials, process and product development with advanced materials. A functional understanding of powder characterization, powder processing methods and characterization of sintered material. . Experience with Design of Experiments and statistical analysis tools like Minitab. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to work independently or lead others, exercising good technical judgement and interpersonal skills to work as a member of a diverse team.
Desired Qualifications:
M.S, . in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent, with at least three (3) years of direct and hands-on experience in process and product development with advanced materials and structures using binder jetting additive manufacturing systems. A functional understanding of powder characterization, powder processing, sintering behavior and computational sinter modeling. Demonstrated understanding and experience with DfAM tools, metrology of 3D shapes and 3D modeling. Experience with Design of Experiments and statistical analysis tools like Minitab. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Project management or technical team leadership experience. Ability to work independently or lead others, exercising good technical judgement and interpersonal skills to work as a member of a diverse team.
Special Working Conditions:
Some work will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment, including for example respirators and safety shoes. Travel not to exceed 20%.
