Summary:

This job requires the operation of all CNC machines, manual machines and equipment used for prototyping and metal cutting testing within the Latrobe GMT department.

 

Tasks:

Prototyping:

Create prototypes and manufacturing process procedures for new products being developed through the global RD&E development process. May also require the manufacture of prototypes for customer support and non-development projects. This will require the ability to setup and operate all types of machines in the Prototype Lab utilizing NX parametric solid models, CNC programming using the NX CAM module and NX post processing. Construct jigs and fixtures to enable the machining of complex prototype and/or manufacturing development parts, some machining may require the use of manual and/or CNC equipment in the prototype lab. Operates manual and CNC machines to provide accurate surfaces and/or dimensions in the manufacture of prototype or developmental parts. Inspects prototype work pieces against drawing specifications for quality and accuracy using optical, electronic, and/or mechanical instruments. Required to modify, adjust, and/or re-machine parts not within specification.

Metalcutting Testing:

Metal cutting testing for newly developed products, customer support and product demonstrations, which may require working an off-shift. This will require the ability to setup and operate the CNC machines and equipment used for testing. Will become proficient in all aspects of set-up and data collection. Set up the machine and test conditions as directed and insure these conditions are followed during machine cycles. Will install machine controlled edits, as required, to establish, modify, or develop required test conditions in various CNC controls. Establish and complete independently all the standard testing required for normal operations and can effectively conduct all the standard customer demonstrations required.

Equipment and associated tasks:

This includes, but is not limited to, measuring equipment, personal computers, microscopes, profilometers, hardness test machines, dynamometers, balancers, video equipment, imaging equipment, electronic gages and read-outs. Must maintain accurate clearly legible written records, or electronic records, as required. Follow test procedures. Mark and identify test tools and insure accurate tool control. Resolve unclear or conflicting issues with the test requestor. Maintain direct feedback with requestors in Engineering, Sales and Marketing, and R&D. Prepare workpiece, track material and record necessary data. Operates department material handling equipment, including overhead cranes, forklifts, etc.  Experience with 3D CAD design and CAM programming is desired and would be a plus. Proficiency in NX is not required but an understanding of CAD/CAM capabilities and the ability to learn is desired.  We develop skills through ongoing training.  Respected liaison between the prototype lab and manufacturing to support the production release process, recommend best practices and implement process optimization procedures.  Conducts basic chemical, mechanical and electrical maintenance on specific manual and CNC equipment to keep the equipment in good operating condition.

 

Preferred Requirements:

The position requires an associate degree with four years technical experience ( two related ), or technical school training and six years technical experience ( two related ), or a minimum of a High school diploma or GED and ten years technical experience (four related) with strengths in technical math, computers, and CNC programming. Journeyman Machinist certification (preferred) with experience operating manual lathes, mills, grinders, and inspection equipment exhibiting excellent geometric symbol definition characteristics procedures. Would also consider candidates interested in the NTMA Journeyman Machinists Apprentice program opportunity. Strong emphasis will be on set-up and operation of various complex CNC machines and programming using the NX CAM system. The candidate must have a proven track record relative to safe working conditions as well as working well with other personnel, project engineers, sales representatives and customers. The candidate must exhibit accuracy during all part programming, machining, grinding, and inspection procedures. Proficiency programming and operating multi-axis machines including four and five axis machining centers is a plus.
