Engineer – Materials Science


Kennametal, Inc. seeks Engineer – Materials Science to work in Latrobe, PA to support product development, process development, intellectual property, and manufacturing through the identification and design of appropriate analyses for characterization of a wide variety of material systems. The position serves as a technical resource for X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, LIBS, and mechanical testing with responsibility for the daily operation of analytical instrumentation, design of fixturing, and knowledge sharing of standardized procedures across all corporate locations. The position also serves as a resource for maintaining laboratory management systems with the responsibility of supporting customers by resolving any queries and improving the customer interface.


Must have a master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Materials or Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus one (1) year of experience in a related position.


Must also have any experience with or knowledge of: (i) physics, chemistry, material science, and metallurgy with laboratory experience (ii) crystallography, spectroscopy, powder metallurgy, elements and phases formed in hard metals and in coatings used for cutting tools  (iii) cutting tool grades, specifications and applications (iv) manufacturing processes: powder processing, pressing and sintering and CVD and PVD coating processes (v) statistics and data analysis using statistical analysis software such as JMP or Minitab (vi) technical communication to support software and instrument set up and operation including creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) while working within a cross-functional team environment.


Must also be able to lift and position moderate-weight equipment.  Laboratory activities require the use of appropriate PPE (may include safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes, dust mask).
