Job Title: Sr. Engineer - Engineering Technology
Location: Latrobe, PA

Kennametal, Inc. is seeking an experienced scientist to join the Materials Analysis and Metrology team in Latrobe, PA to support product development, process development, intellectual property, and manufacturing.  The position serves as a technical resource for analytical techniques with responsibility for the daily operation of analytical instrumentation, development of analytical techniques, and fundamental understanding of materials properties critical to product performance.

 

Job Description – Requirements

Must have a graduate degree in Materials Science or related field, or bachelors degree with 5-10 years of experience. Proficiency with TEM and metallography is required. Other beneficial knowledge/experience would include image analysis for quantitative microscopy, failure analysis, instrumented indentation testing, magnetic property testing and/or mechanical testing. Knowledge of hard metals, metal alloys, industrial ceramics, CVD and PVD coatings is strongly preferred. Must utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and good organizational, time management and prioritization skills. Independent work as well as collaborative interaction in a team environment with a diverse group of engineers, scientists and manufacturing personnel is expected.  Laboratory activities require use of appropriate PPE (may include safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes, dust mask).

 

Job Description – Tasks

  • Conduct microstructure characterization using TEM techniques.
  • Collaborate with other materials analysis and technology development team members to establish testing plans. Conduct hands-on analysis utilizing multiple analytical techniques to address requests.
  • Coordinate analysis with university and commercial labs to augment analytical capabilities.
  • Summarize results of analysis, communicate conclusions and impact, lead teams to resolution in the systematic use of data-driven analysis.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for materials analysis and fundamental understanding of materials properties for enterprise-wide support.
  • Research, evaluate and develop analytical techniques for implementation at Technology Center and/or transfer to production.
  • Author and maintain internal procedures and work instructions.
