Engineer Metal Cutting Technology-US

Job Summary

The primary focus of this position is research, development and support of surface treatment and edge preparation processes used in the manufacturing of cemented tungsten carbide metal cutting inserts and round tools. This position will be responsible for development of new techniques/processes in an R&D environment as well as supporting Kennametal’s global insert manufacturing business through identification of opportunities for process improvement, standardization, capital equipment selection, and the implementation of each in production environments.

Key Job Responsibilities

· Develop new surface treatment and edge preparation processes through R&D and formal Design of Experiments in a lab environment

· Scale R&D processes for production operations

· Perform implementation/qualification in manufacturing environments

· Research emerging technologies in academia and industries to develop Open Innovation plans and technology roadmaps

· Collaborate with external partners in development of new technologies with objective of implementing in-house solutions

· Evaluate analytical testing related to surface treatment and edge preparation. Identify opportunities for new/improved analytical methods.

· Author and maintain technical procedures and work instructions. Train personnel on implementation/use.

· Drive process improvement and standardization across global manufacturing facilities

· Develop project plans, budgets, team selection, assign activities, conducting progress reviews, launching corrective actions, assuring all EHS guidelines and requirements are met and reporting progress to plant management

· Assist in vendor selection, prepare functional specifications, and train personnel in research and manufacturing laboratories

· Effective “hands-on” process and equipment support for the implementation of quality/capability/productivity improvements as well as troubleshooting in R&D and production environments

· Prepare progress, status and forecast reports on key aspects of the assigned area of responsibility

· Collaborate with sourcing and external suppliers to specify and procure capital equipment. Develop statements of work (SOW) in support of capital equipment sourcing

Required Experience

· Development of technical solutions through R&D and formal Design of Experiments in a lab environment, scaling to global manufacturing, and documenting technical specifications is required

· Management of complex and evolving organizational interdependencies and support internal equipment and method transfers

· Leading teams to resolution in the systematic use of data-driven analysis, decision making and validation

· Mechanical aptitude relevant to equipment/process in support of surface treatment, edge preparation and cleaning systems

Desired Experience

· Direct experience with industrial brush honing, blasting, and cleaning equipment

· Development of statement of work requirements relevant to capital equipment sourcing

· Experience working in research and development and/or manufacturing environment

Years of Relevant Work Experience Required: 3-5 Years

Minimum Level of Education (for Job): Bachelor’s Degree

Education: BS/MS Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in: Material Science, Mechatronic Engineering, etc. will be considered) Skills / Experience • Structured Process Development scaled to standardized manufacturing

· Six Sigma Methodology

· Optical inspection methods and analysis

· Design of Experiments

· Chemical cleanliness analysis

· Technical Procedure Development
