Job Summary

Run multiple periphery grinding machines producing a quality product to blueprint specifications.


Key Job Responsibilities

Set up and operate any or all of the following machines: Dom, Wendt, and Combi.

Orient inserts before grinding.

Load and off-load inserts from multiple grinding machines.

Gage inserts to ensure proper dimensions.

Scope inserts to verify visual characteristics.

Pull samples and Record inspection results on route cart. Place inserts into appropriate racks before and after grinding.

Separate scrap from good inserts documents accurately.

Scan correct production information.

Maintain tooling used in machines, resurfacing as needed.

Operate other equipment as needed.

Train new operators when required.

Operators required to troubleshooting moderate to complex problems.

Commitment to working safely and understand all safety procedures.

Deviations in routine are handled according to operating procedures and/or work instructions.

The operator is responsible for following an inspection control plan, assuring the product is processed according to proper routings, specifications and that the quantity and style are correct.

Work to meet daily departmental production goals.

Must be reliable and dependable.

Communicate safety, quality, product issues with supervisor, team members, and across shifts.


Knowledge and Skills

Able to do basic and complex math including metric conversions, geometry, and trigonometry.

Able to read and understand defect criteria in Kennametal intranet, insert identification, blueprints, routings, and operating procedures.

Is able to handle inserts with fingers without chipping.

Read blueprints to determine dimensions to be held while grinding periphery and must be able to locate documents in QMS.

Understand proper use of gages, various optical gauging equipment standard micrometers, Keyence, Digimatic Indicators, 30X Microscope, “V” anvil micrometers, and Hole Micrometers to measure the characteristics being ground to meet the blueprint specifications.

Ability to use a personal computer and various software such as SAP MII, locate information in QMS, and on the Kennametal Intranet for Edge Prep, ISO Procedures, and work instructions.

Communicate with set-up persons, inspectors, supervisors, and managers.

Proficiency reached in nine (9) months or less.

Must complete classes in blueprint reading, SPC training, and insert ID within 6 months or less within starting the position.


Work Environment

The environment with controlled temperatures and dust collection systems. Safety glasses with side shields required. Safety Shoes are required. Gloves, cut-resistant gloves when necessary.


Physical Demands

Approximately eight hours standing with two break opportunities per eight-hour work period. Intermittent walking, reaching, sitting, and bending. Lifting insert trays weighing no more than thirty-three (33) pounds.


Problem Solving

Run orders by the due date.

Follow control plan Assignments and instructions communicated orally and carried out by standing guidelines.

Must inspect and modify tooling as required.

Moderate to complex problems solved by the operator using learned knowledge of insert style, production processes, and in some cases, coordination with technical experts inside and outside of the plant.

Recurring problems and major decisions receive supervisor attention.


Education and Experience

Must have a High School diploma or GED
