Business Unit Operations Director

Based in Solon, Ohio



Job overview:


Accountable for the successful performance of manufacturing operations, maintenance, quality, EH&S, material and talent management activities related to the respective operations for which they are assigned.  Through collaborative interaction of various functional representatives and members of their organization structure, this role exists to ensure a fiscally responsible operation exists run by the principles and core values of the organization.  Typically, regional in nature assigned to a Business Unit within the Kennametal portfolio.  Limited in responsibility related to commercial activity, but must collaborate to achieve meeting customer requirements.  Ideal candidate will have experience with the journey of the digital smart factor / I 4.0.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Ensures a positive Health, Safety and Environmental interdependent culture exists which prioritizes key communication and preventative actions resulting in a safe work environment for all employees in the plants under this individual’s leadership. 
  • Provides clear leadership that inspires and motivates staff to ensure sustaining the ongoing business & exceeding the Site Performance Metrics to meet customer demand.
  • Drives the implementation of the manufacturing strategy and roadmap for the factory of the future for the site.  
  • Leads and drives the deployment of Operational Excellence including implementation of Lean and continuous improvement.
  • Works collaboratively with Product Management, Supply Chain & Quality to align operational capabilities with short/long term customer needs for the operating site.
  • Provides leadership to drive change, identify risks and mitigation strategies and continue to develop the Plant into a world class manufacturing site.
  • Manages the talent needs & leads a positive employee relations approach to ensure a rewarding & engaging working environment that propels opportunities for growth.  Creates a learning and development environment where knowledge sharing is prevalent.
  • Works in conjunction with the Business Unit Leader & Global Manufacturing and the Advanced Manufacturing Group to deploy manufacturing processes for all new product introductions and product enhancement programs.
  • Aligns to key stakeholders of the commercial organization and key customers ensuring a market facing approach to exceeding customer expectation in quality and delivery are achieved in a sustainable manner.
  • Leads the delivery of innovative, cost effective, safe manufacturing technology processes and techniques which provide sustainable year-over-year decreases in operational costs and increases in overall efficiency of the manufacturing site.
  • Drives and promotes synergies between facilities, drives standardization and adopts best practices to establish the reputation of a global benchmark site.


Education and Experience Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Operations related discipline is required; an advanced degree is preferred.  MBA desired.
  • 8-10 years of progressive leadership roles in manufacturing operations (production, quality, material management, supply planning) with demonstrable experience and proven track record of delivering on key site performance metrics with focus on continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of IT systems in a modernized and digital manufacturing environment is important along with working in an SAP environment.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience dealing with site modernization / transformation including culture change, technology integration, product production movement, and site expansion / construction.  
  • Experience in process design lean manufacturing/6 Sigma knowledge.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to lead and deliver on project deliverables.
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to optimize team performance and seamlessly work with cross functional groups to deliver exceptional results.
  • Excellent relationship management skills with the ability to engage, negotiate and manage key stakeholders and suppliers at all levels.
  • Proven experience developing future manufacturing and business leaders using coaching, talent development and performance management
